Salt or very salty food

Amount and access to water matter

Too much salt can cause intense thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, neurological signs. Risk rises when a dog consumes very salty food or sea water and cannot drink enough fresh water.

What now?

Offer fresh water but do not force it. For a large or unknown amount, vomiting, tremors, weakness or unusual behaviour, call a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately.
